It is surrounded by three national parks and has many local places of interest nearby. Calascio & Rocca Calascio (approx. 10-12 km) is famous for its high-altitude, stunning, medieval fortress, while Navelli (3-4 km) is known for its historic centre and saffron production. It is the ideal base for visiting and experiencing Abruzzo to its full potential, whatever your interests: nature, outdoors, art, food and more.

The D’Alessandro family's origins in Caporciano have been documented since the late 1500s.

The Palazzo is a captivating blend of experiences: a museum, a venue for cultural events, and an elegant bed and breakfast inviting guests to unwind. Each room is thoughtfully curated, telling a rich story through its unique decorations, carefully selected furnishings, and diverse artwork. • The Terence Conran apartment is a spectacular contemporary-style apartment, not surprisingly dedicated to Terence Conran, British designer and founder of the Design Museum and ideal for a romantic getaway.

• The Croisette Apartment is dedicated to the world of film and television and is furnished with modern elements that recreate the atmosphere of a 1960s bar.

• The Colonel D’Alessandro Suite is a dive into the history of the first half of the 20th century and the two world wars, where Pasquale D’Alessandro served as an officer. It consists of a large frescoed living room, bedroom and bathroom and enjoys a panoramic view of the garden and valley.

• The Francesco D’Alessandro Master Suite, named after the iconic “Don Ciccuccio,” includes two double bedrooms, a large living room and a boudoir decorated as a portrait gallery. The ceilings are all finely frescoed with the original decorations.

As you step through the main door, you'll find yourself in a lovely vaulted entrance hall, filled with fascinating artefacts that have been cherished in the house for centuries. One highlight is a fragment of a Roman tomb monument decorated with gladiatorial symbols, adding a touch of history to your visit! Climb the charming stone staircase, and you’ll reach the Piano Nobile, where the common rooms and suites await. The dining room is warm and inviting, featuring original cast-iron radiators from the early 1900s that have been lovingly restored and are ready to keep you cosy. You’ll also notice some stunning paintings on the walls that were recently uncovered and restored. The fireplace room, which used to be an ancient winter hearth, has transformed into a spacious living room, perfect for relaxing and surrounded by interesting historical and artistic treasures. And just beyond this room, a door leads to the Palace’s quaint little chapel. It may be small, but its unique decorations and sacred furnishings make it truly special. Last but certainly not least, the old kitchen has been turned into a cosy breakfast room, complete with a fireplace and “fornacelle” where you can enjoy your meals in a charming atmosphere.

Each of the four floors has an exit to the street or to one of the terraced garden levels. The terraced garden consists of four levels, offering panoramic views towards Civitaretenga and Navelli. The upper level features a semi-covered terrace adorned with Portuguese flooring, expertly laid by a “mestre calçeteiro” from Lisbon, honouring the Portante-D’Alessandro family's connection to the Lusitanian heritage.

Descending a beautiful old white stone staircase, you arrive at a small square that includes a stone table and seat, located near the door leading to the old kitchen.

A few steps lower, you'll find a garden area with seating and decorative stone elements, along with a covered relaxation space that is also equipped for outdoor cooking. Further down, at the lower level, there is a wooden deck that accommodates a large Jacuzzi tub, again offering stunning panoramic views of the valley. A pergola provides shade along the path from the ground-floor door to the entrance of the old driveway.

The "wash house" is located in Castel di Sangro just 9 kilometres from the tourist centre Roccaraso - Rivisondoli - Aremogna, in the Alto Sangro valley with a view of the mountains surrounding the town. The property has 10 rooms on two floors and three rooms on two separate floors, accessible by two spiral staircases.

The B&B is located in the town's historic centre and has a large garden with various relaxation corners. Furthermore, there is a small private car park, a wi-fi area, TV in all rooms, a large hall with a fireplace and an exhibition area created from the old municipal wash house, completely made of stone, available to customers.

The rooms of the "Lavatoio" are welcoming and furnished with care and attention to detail. The windows of all the rooms open onto the garden or the mountains that frame the Alto Sangro valley.

There are three different room types:

• double bedroom

• large double bedroom

• quadruple room with double bed and two single beds.

A breath of the past combined with the beauty of the present

Early on in history, the contadina (countrywoman) would wash clothes in the nearby river, on her knees, regardless of season or weather. They would bring a wooden washboard to the river, some of these were very wide, offering a communal laundering experience. Some households had their own wooden troughs with a washboard built-in, but water would still have to be hauled from the river or local fountain in order to use it. It wasn't until 1897 that the first public lavatoio (washhouse) was built in towns and villages around Italy. Some had roofs with open sides--similar to market structures--to keep the women out of the sun and rain. Many were built near existing streams and were designed to direct the fresh running water through a trough. Still, others had plumbing and elevated wash tanks, allowing women to stand while they washed clothes. What a luxury this simple change must have been!

Our location is perfect for those who wish to explore the Italian region of Abruzzo by car or motorcycle. The area is popular with cyclists both on- and off-road and those who prefer to explore the countryside on foot.

It’s a 45 minute drive to the sea or you can find yourself at the foot of the mountains within 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can explore numerous nearby medieval villages such as Castiglione Messer Raimondo, Bisenti and Cellino Attanasio or the market towns of Atri and Penne. If you wish to experience city life, you will find a mix of culture and arts within the historic walls of Teramo, while the region's largest city, Pescara which is located on the coast, is known for its shopping, its nightlife and is the home of Aurum, the favoured digestivo in Abruzzo.

The region of Abruzzo offers sightseeing in abundance including ancient castles, historic fortresses, centuries-old hermitages and archaeological ruins.

I come from Lazio and I moved to Abruzzo more than 10 years ago after falling in love with my husband. At that time I was working in Rome for Alitalia, the most important Italian Flying company. I have been studying foreign languages since high school and university and I was planning to work and travel around the world to discover different places and cultures. Meeting my husband was one of the most important things in my life. Since then I decided to move to Abruzzo to renovate his old country house he just inherited from his great-parents. 

I completely changed my life from a town girl to a country one. I discovered the beauty of a slow country living in a land rich in wild nature, culture heritage, history and amazing good food and wines. We love sharing our passion for homemade, seasonal and local food. 

We do believe it’s important to support small farmers’ businesses to help them keep their traditions alive.

Here at Kokopelli, we value nature and biodiversity, so we are free from manicured, marked out plots, boundaries or uniformity.  We only cut the grass when and where it is absolutely necessary, the rest is left to “rewild” or provide a home for our organic fruit and veg that you are welcome to help yourself to. There’s no lighting in the camping field (apart from the moon and stars) and only subtle, solar powered lighting to illuminate essential areas. 

Whatever your interest, we have endless routes, tracks, trails and crags right on our doorstep in the Maiella National Park.  If you need help and advice, we have plenty of experience of climbing, mountain biking, cycle touring, hiking, snowshoeing and skiing in the area.  We have a supply of hiking maps, books and climbing guides, plus our own folder of self-guided hikes.  We know the area well and will happily give guidance and recommendations to any of our campers.Kokopelli Camping Retreat.
